It’s almost local election season! Can I talk about politics in the Milton Neighbors Facebook group?
There has been some puzzling chatter in Milton’s social media world as of late, so we want to take a minute to clear it up.
To be honest, we are confused about the confusion, since the rules have been the same since that year we were all sitting around, surrounded by seven feet of snow (remember all of the complaints about snow removal and then the complaints about the complaints about snow removal?).
It’s almost like somebody’s been spreading misinformation about Milton Neighbors and it has been repeated so many times, some people believe it’s a fact.
I hate it when that happens!
Anyway…
Q: Can I talk about politics in Milton Neighbors?
A: Local political discussion has always been permitted. General/nationwide political discussion is not permitted.
![Text detailing rules against political promotion or general political discussions, especially within the Milton Neighbors Facebook group, is available. For more information on how these guidelines affect local election conversations, please follow the link provided.](https://www.miltonscene.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/01/political-rules-mn-0125.jpg)
What is permitted:
Local political discussions – about town issues such as the MBTA law, school issues, budget issues, the Warrant, Town Meeting, etc. have been going on since this group was started in 2013.
Search on any of these terms in this group and you will see examples of those discussions and news stories about them.
What is not permitted:
1. Advertising your political candidacy (we have a process for announcing your candidacy (for free) which we post about HEAVILY in the Milton Neighbors group and on The Milton Scene during campaign season).
2. Promoting another candidate: Not permitted. This is promotion. See above or advertise with us.
3. General politics: Want to post about your adoration of a U.S. president, the hate of a U.S. president, or your thoughts on hot-button national issues such as immigration or DEI? There are many opportunities for you to post this elsewhere. Do it on your own page or in another group. Not in Milton Neighbors.
(And this is not a violation of your free speech, by the way. Facebook is a private platform, not the U.S. government. Facebook admins determine rules and you can opt to be a member of the group and follow those rules – or not – completely your choice.)
Again, these have been the rules since about 2015.
Thank you for your membership!
