Milton Public Library announces adult programs for October 2024

During the month of October, the Milton Public Library has an entertaining and educational lineup of programs for adults and families to enjoy. Following are some details about our ongoing programming. This month there will be another “Adult Yoga” class with instructor Sheila Armstrong on Tuesday, October 1 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., and another “Chair Yoga” session on Thursday, October 10, from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. To see all the other dates for yoga and to sign up for either of these, go to our website: www.miltonlibrary.org/events.

Once there, choose “see all events” and then find the date you want. Advance registration is required for each individual date to participate, and these free classes fill up fast. Please join us to practice asanas (yoga poses) and breathing techniques to create more space in our minds and bodies at adult yoga, and gain core strength, improve mobility and flexibility, and increase mental clarity at chair yoga. Chair yoga is a very beneficial practice for teenagers, adults, seniors, people in wheelchairs or those with physical disabilities or medical concerts. These classes are for ages 13 and up, space is limited and they are held in the Keys Community Room.

The MA Library Collaborative’s Online 50+ Job Seekers Group will meet twice this month via Zoom. The dates are: Wednesdays, October 2 for the topic “Cover Letters/Using AI” and October 16 for “Thinking Outside the Box.” Both of these online networking opportunities start at 9:30 a.m., require individual date advance registration at our website, and are facilitated by experienced executive career coach, Deborah Hope. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your “Encore Career,” this networking program is perfect for you! Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking! Please join us.

The twice monthly Library Knitting Group is a long-standing get together of fabric artists who just drop in when they can to bring a project to share, learn tips and tricks from others, and meet new friends! This month the group will meet on Thursday, October 3, at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, October 19, at 10:00 a.m. in the Conference Room. Please note that this is not a group for beginners, but for those who already know how to knit. We encourage you to just come on one of those dates to attend, as no signup is required. If you would like to get on the knitting Email list for reminders, please Email [email protected] and she will put you in touch with the volunteer coordinator.

The Cookbook Club will meet on Thursday, October 3, from 6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in our Keys Community Room, and Connie Spiros and Sara Truog invite you to the next session. Calling all cooks! Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook , and members will prepare a tasty treat from the selected book to bring to the Library and share. Our Fall concert series starts off on Saturday, October 5, at 2:00 p.m., in our Keys Community Room with a first event called: “Singers Entertain us! with Jean & Friends.” Librarian Jean Hlady is our “usual program host” but she is also a musician, and in this concert, vocalists Denise Randall and former MPL staff member Dan Haacker will present some familiar standards and pop tunes for you, to be joined by the talented singer/pianist and Professor at Berklee College of Music, Steve Heck. Please come join us to hear 4 singers croon to some of their favorite songs, which you probably also know and love. No signup is required to attend, and this concert is free and open to all. We would love to see you there for a fun afternoon of music!

Our Wednesday Monthly Movie will be shown on October 9 starting at 6:30 p.m., and the pick is “Arthur the King” which stars Mark Wahlberg in a wonderful true story. This inspiring film celebrates the human and animal spirit as Michael Light (Wahlberg), and a scrappy street dog named Arthur, forge a bond when Michael puts together a team for the punishing Adventure Racing World Championship in Santo Domingo. Light is desperate for one last win, and while navigating the brutal course, his team meets the dog Arthur, who refuses to leave their side. Arthur defines what victory and friendship truly mean. This story is based on the book called Arthur – The Dog Who Crossed the Jungle to Find a Home by Mikael Lindnord (c2018). Don’t miss this one! The running time is 117 minutes and it is rated PG-13 for some strong language. No advance signup is required and we hope you will join us in the Keys Community Room for this movie.

Then on Thursday, October 10, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., there will be the first meeting of a monthly “Adult Dungeons and Dragons” campaign with staff member Tyler Vachon. Calling all adventurers! This program is free to attend, and no past familiarity with D&D is required. This first meeting will be a session 0 including character creation, an overview of 5th Edition D&D, and setting information for this homebrew campaign created by DM Kathy. Registration is required at our website: www.miltonlibrary.org, so please go there to find our “events” choice and the date to sign up. Hope to see you there!

Author and Historian Jeremy D’Entremont will be the speaker for a virtual talk to celebrate all things spooky to acknowledge upcoming Halloween, which our host, Jean Hlady. always enjoys. The program, scheduled for Tuesday, October 15 starting at 7:00 p.m., will be held via Zoom, and it is called: “Haunted Lighthouses of New England.” Lighthouses are picturesque icons that remind us our rich maritime history, but they also have a “dark side.” Lighthouses and ghost stories often seem to go hand in hand, as confirmed by the many horror stories and movies that have utilized lighthouses as their settings. This presentation will focus on some of the macabre tales of New England’s coastal beacons, including the lovelorn spirit known as “Ernie” at Connecticut’s New London Ledge Light and the piano playing ghost of Maine’s Seguin Light. And there will be more fascinating tales, as told to us by Mr. D’Entremont, who is the historian for the U.S. Lighthouse Society, a former president of the American Lighthouse Foundation, and the author of more than 20 books and hundreds of articles on lighthouses and maritime history. On Saturday, October 19, from 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., Pop-up Art School will be back at the MPL in our Keys Community Room to teach an adult craft program called: “Reverse Painting – Choose Your Image.” In this project, you will learn about this centuries-old art form to reverse glass painting and create our own lovely piece. Choose from 3 images and paint it using acrylic paint on clear acetate. Reverse painting techniques have been used since the 16th century. The details are painted first and then the large shapes are created. For more details, go to this link where you will also need to register in advance, as space is limited: https://tinyurl.com/yk262wpk Please join us!

And finally, there will be a “Financial Literacy Program” on Wednesday, October 23, starting at 3:00 p.m. in our Keys Room. The title is: “Fraud Prevention for Families with Citizens.” During this engaging and interactive session, subject matter experts from Citizens’ Fraud Prevention and Branch Operations will provide valuable insights on some of the most common fraud tactics and strategies to help protect personal data and identity. Whether you are getting ready to open your first bank account or have been banking for decades, this talk is great for anyone ages 10-110. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to attend with their children and aging loved ones for whom they care also. The speakers will be Erin Donnelly, Head of Claims Operations and Jeanne White, Branch Manager at East Milton Citizens, and this event was organized by Allegra Murray, who is the Corporate Giving Operations Manager at Citizens. For more information and to register in advance to attend, please go to www.miltonlibrary.org to find program details.
