Milton Public Library announces adult programs for September 2024

During the month of September, the Milton Public Library has some great programs scheduled for adults and families to enjoy. We have several ongoing activities you may want to check out. Our online MA Collaborative Job Series for 50+ series will meet twice in September. There are two zoom meetings held each month, and they will happen in Sept. on Sept. 4 to discuss “Linkedin” and Sept. 18 to tackle the topic of “Resumes.”   Both Wednesday meetings start at 9:30 a.m. If you are unemployed and actively looking, underemployed, seeking a new career direction, re-entering the job market after a long employment gap, or recently retired and looking for your “Encore Career,” this networking group program is perfect for you!  Remember, 85% of jobs are found through networking!   Join us in a professional forum for networking with peers in a safe and comfortable environment conducive to developing new relationships and developing skills and strategies to help in your career transition. Each meeting features a new topic. Each biweekly meeting is facilitated by Deborah Hope, MBA, PCIC, an experienced executive career coach. The series is sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and is managed by the Tewksbury Public Library, with a large group of MA public libraries now participating. Advance registration is required to receive the Zoom link so sign up here: www.tinyurl.com/library50plusjobseekers. We hope you might join us!

Our Monthly Movie Night will happen this month on Wednesday, Sept. 4, starting at 6:30 p.m. in our Keys Community Room with the film: “The Boys in the Boat.”  This movie tells the story of the University of Washington’s rowing team and their quest for gold at the 1936 Olympics. It is a compelling and inspiring tale of resilience, determination, and the power of teamwork. This is simply a wonderful story which was directed by George Clooney in 2024. The running time is 123 minutes, it is rated PG-13 for language, and there is no charge to attend. (This follows a Milton town-wide read of the book we did quite a few years ago.)  Please come and enjoy an air-conditioned movie!!

One more ongoing program starting back up this Fall is the drop-in Library Knitting Group. This is a chance for fabric crafters to come together, share projects, and meet new friends!  No signup is required to attend, so just come to our lower level Conference Room at these twice-a-month meetings. In September the group will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday morning, Sept. 14, starting at 10:00 a.m., usually for an hour-and-a-half. Please note that this is not a beginning knitters’ instructional session – it is for experienced knitters only. For more information about this program, please go to www.miltonlibrary.org, choose “events” and then click on the dates mentioned here.

Also there will be 2 yoga classes held in Sept. Chair Yoga with Marianne Zullas will happen on Thursday, Sept. 12, at 3:00 p.m., in our Keys Community Room. This exercise is recommended for those who may have limited mobility or who may spend long periods in a seated position. Advance signup is required at www.miltonlibrary.org where you can also learn more about the practice. And the Adult Yoga class, also with Marianne, will happen this month on Saturday, Sept. 21, starting at 10:30 (please note new, earlier start time). Again, go to our website to sign up in advance as space is limited.

In addition, in September, there will also be a yarn sale with the Friends of the Milton Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Keys Community Room. Yarns and other knitting notions will be for sale at great prices!  To learn more, go to www.miltonlibrary.org

Milton author Adina O’Neill will come to the MPL in person on Tuesday night, Sept. 10, starting at 7:00 p.m., in our Keys Community Room, to talk about her book called: “Forward Is A Pace – Real Athletes Don’t Fit In, They Stand Out (c2024)  This program is both an in person sports talk, and a celebration of “ordinary” people, written for all of the unseen, non-traditional, underdog-type athletes – those who are tired of being left out, just because they don’t fit society’s definitions. Teens are welcome to attend too!  Adina draws on her experience as a Head Coach of “Team B*REAL” and a Triathlon Coach, Swim Technician and Fitness Motivator. No advance registration is required. Just come listen to a very inspiring speaker, where copies of her book will also be for sale.

Next, there is a fun new book group just for those under the age of 40!  Are you under 40 and eager to connect with fellow book enthusiasts?  Boozy Bookworms might be the perfect fit for you!  Facilitated by library staff members Tory Fiske and Micaela Soucy, this book club will meet offsite at Steel & Rye for lively discussions over delicious food and drinks. Please note: attendees are responsible for purchasing their own food and refreshments and we recommend arriving 15 minutes early if you plan to order. The first meeting will happen on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and we are reading Anita de Monte Laughs Last by Xochitl Gonzalez. Search “view catalog” at our website (www.miltonlibrary.org) to request a copy of the book and you must have an OCLN library card to register for the group. Advance registration is required to attend the discussion, so go to our website (click on “events” from the main page to sign up). Questions?  Email Tory Fiske at [email protected]

Another book meeting this month with the Celebrity Book Club is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 12, starting at 7:00 p.m. in the Keys Community Room, with hosts Sally Lawler and Sara Truog. Read what the celebrities are reading!  These 2 staff members will lead you in a fun, relaxed discussion of books recommended by popular celebrities, and this month’s pick was recommended by Steven Spielberg, The title is: The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. NYT best-selling author Courtney Sullivan, who hails originally from Milton, will visit the MPL on Tuesday, Sept. 17, starting at 7 PM in our Keys Community Room, to tell us all about her new book called: The Cliffs. This is her latest novel, and it was called “a stunning achievement” by popular fiction author Ann Napolitano. Join Courtney to find out more about this story of family, secrets, ghosts and homecoming set on the seaside cliffs of Maine. Copies of The Cliffs will be available for purchase and signing during this event.. No signup is required to attend – just come and enjoy the program!

Our ongoing Booked for Lunch group with staff member Sara Truog will happen in the Conference Room on Monday, Sept. 16, starting at 12 noon. In this silent monthly book club, a half hour of socializing and eating lunch together and a half hour of silent reading time is planned. We’ll talk about what books we’re reading and share our top picks (and maybe the duds too). Participants should bring a bag lunch and a book to read, and this program is for adults only. Registration in advance is also required, so please use this link to sign up:   https://tinyurl.com/57v97v7s

And finally, we are having a virtual animal talk called: “Decoding the Mysteries of Cats” with expert Stephen Quant. It’s happening at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom on Tuesday, Sept. 24. This cat program attracts cat owners with behavior questions and is a service to the community. People with cat behavior challenges often have few places to turn and access to a behaviorist for free is very attractive. People always give great feedback to this program and cat lovers really enjoy the opportunity to talk with a professional behaviorist!  David Grimm, author of Citizen Canine: Our Evolving Relationship with Cats and Dogs, says this about the presentation: “Surprising, informative, and just plain fun!  I learned a lot from Stephen’s presentation. And that’s saying a lot coming from me…!”  Please register in advance to receive the Zoom link, and you may use this link to do so: https://tinyurl.com/bdzmkj3s

All of these events are kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and are free and open to all. Questions?  Email [email protected] or call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964. We encourage you to come visit us – either in person or virtually – this September for an enjoyable program!
