Two Milton High students joined others from across Massachusetts to testify at the State House in front of the Joint Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure. This committee oversees alcohol policy and these young people were sharing their thoughts about the impact of alcohol on their communities. Maya Sekhar and Melina Zullas had strong messages for the policy makers in the room as well as their colleagues. “Youth using alcohol in parks has caused growing safety issues including property damage, fights and assaults,” shared Ms. Sekhar.

Ms. Zullas said, “You must work with your fellow legislators to raise the alcohol tax and limit the number of businesses with alcohol licenses. Research has shown that decreasing availability will make it harder for our peers to get their hands on these harmful beverages. This way, the lives of students, parents, friends, and family members both in Milton and around Massachusetts will be safer, less stressful, and less full of worry.”

Thank you to Maya and Melina!
