Bao Qiu announces candidacy for Milton School Committee position and Town Meeting Member, Precinct 8

Dear neighbors,

My name is Bao Qiu, I am a career educator, a long-time Milton resident, and a proud mother of two Cunningham students, Hilson and Hilsa Chen. Go Cougars! I am thrilled to announce my candidacy for both the Milton School Committee position and Town Meeting Member in Precinct 8. I am looking for your support on April 25th.

As a first-generation immigrant, I am proud to have received my education from the Boston Public Schools and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, which are recognized as some of the top public education institutions in the United States.

Throughout my career, I have held multiple roles, including teacher, mentor, advisor, trip leader, curriculum developer, and program director, which have equipped me with a broad range of skills and experience to effectively identify, understand, and support students’ needs. As a mother of two children in our public schools and a long-time career educator, it is my mission to ensure that every student in our community receives the support and guidance they need to achieve their full potential.

As a community, we have the ability to influence and improve the quality of education in our public schools for both current and future generations. I believe that constructing a new school within the town is necessary and urgent to accommodate the growing number of school-aged children. Additionally, it is crucial to provide early interventions and support for students starting at the early diagnosis stage to ensure their academic growth. We should also explicitly teach fundamental executive functioning skills to students starting at a young age: organizing one’s folders, notebooks, backpacks, and planners; writing down essential notes; managing long term projects and papers in smaller steps; utilizing educational technologies; understanding one’s metacognitive skills; and helping each student find their strength and address areas of growth.

In order to equip our students with the skills they need to succeed as global citizens, we must also offer a diverse range of engaging courses that expand their neurodiversity. Incorporating and expanding subjects like Family Finance, Small Business Entrepreneurship, Career Pathways, Internships, Summer Co-ops, College Application Process, and additional language options such as Chinese, into our curriculum would provide students with valuable skills, experiences, and knowledge for their future careers.
