Select Board March 1: Briefing on MBTA Communities Multifamily Zoning Requirements

Director of Planning and Community Development, Tim Czerwienski, provided a report on the housing legislation that will impact MBTA communities. New state legislation will require MBTA communities to have at least one zoning district of reasonable size where multi-family housing is permitted as a right. Milton has four stations along the Mattapan-Ashmont line and is also served by various bus routes.

Milton will have to set aside at least 50 acres of land within a half-mile of the town’s trolley line stops where multifamily housing can be built under the new guidelines. Failure to create zoning could result in loss of eligibility for some state grant programs. Once zoning is created, Milton will be in compliance under the new regulations.

Milton residents can submit comments on the draft regulations by March 31.
