Milton Public Library announces March 2022 adult programming

During the month of March, the Milton Public Library has organized a lot of fun and educational events for adults and families to enjoy.  Our ongoing MPL Walking Club will continue every Thursday, meeting up in the parking lot at 12 noon, and here are the dates: 3/3, 3/10, 3/17, 3/24 and 3/31.  Advance registration is for required for each date at our website to participate.  Also the Library Knitting Group will meet on Thursday, 3/3, at 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday, 3/19, at 10:00 a.m. in the lower level Conference Room in person.  No signup is required but if you would like to start attending this fun program where knitters share their projects and expertise, send a message to [email protected] and she will send your name to the organizer to get on the Email reminder list.

On Tuesday, 3/1, starting at 7:00 p.m., Interior Designer Barbara Graceffa will give a virtual talk via Zoom called “Big Ideas for Decorating Small Spaces.”   Ms. Graceffa, aka “Secretary of the Interior,” will teach you how to use furnishings and accents that are both functional and beautiful.  If you describe your home (or a room in your home) as modest or cozy, you are most likely living in a small space.  At this talk you’ll discover creative storage solutions, color tips, and secrets that interior decorators use to trick your eye to make small rooms seem more spacious.  Advance registration is required at the MPL website to participate and once signed up, a Zoom link will be sent to you.  The Celebrity Book Club will meet as a hybrid program on Thursday, 3/3, at 7:00 p.m. in person in the Keys Community Room, or you may choose to attend instead virtually via Zoom.  Advance registration is required and please indicate your attendance choice when you sign up.  Read what the celebrities are reading!  Sara and Sally will lead you in a fun, relaxed discussion of books recommended by popular celebrities and the chosen book for March is The Vixen by Francine Prose, recommended by Padma Lakshmi.  To place a reserve on the title, call the Reference Dept. at (617) 898-4964 or go online to www.miltonlibrary.org and log in using your OCLN library card.

We want to remind those participants previously signed up to attend our adult craft workshop that it has been rescheduled (because of snow on the Jan. date) to Saturday, 3/5, from 2:00–3:30p.m.  This class, which will be taught by artist Annie Lavigne, will teach those already registered how to make a felt bird on a wire. This is an in person program only, masks are required to attend, and all materials will be provided.  A reminder Email will be sent out to you before 3/5, and sorry but our participant limit is now full for the workshop.  Sara Truog will be your host for this program.

On 3/12, at 2:00 p.m., there will be a one-hour in person Irish music concert with the band called Connacht.  We are excited to bring back live music for adults and families here at the Library, and this talented band of Boston area musicians will be sure to delight all with their variety of instruments and great harmonies to share a mostly Irish repertoire that also includes folk, blues and Celtic music.  Don’t miss the opportunity to be Irish – we are all once a year, right?  This celebration of St. Paddy’s Day will be an entertaining afternoon of music which will get your toes tapping and might even get you to sing along or dance around the room!  The musical event will be held in the Keys Community Room and attendance is limited, with masks required.  You must register in advance for this program at www.miltonlibrary.org (click on “events” from the main page) as we will be checking people in at the door.  Each individual must sign up (including all members of a family separately) because of the audience size limit.  Participation will not be available via Zoom for this event.  We would love to see you there, so please consider joining host Jean Hlady for a fun afternoon!

There will be a virtual talk on Tuesday, 3/15, at 7:00 p.m. called “The Ultimate Red Sox Presentation” with Midwest author and sportswriter Marty Gitlin.  Marty will be back via Zoom to tell us about his book on the topic, as he covered baseball for nearly two decades as an award-winning journalist.  The program covers the most interesting and greatest teams, players and events in Red Sox history.  You will hear engaging stories, view photos, and see exciting game highlights.  For all the details and to register in advance to receive the Zoom link for this fun program, go to www.miltonlibrary.org and click on “events” from the main page.  We hope to see you there!

The theme of “Gender Identity and the Importance of Pronouns” will be addressed by Professor Shannon Peters of Boston University in a virtual talk on Tuesday, 3/22, at 7:00 p.m.  Learn about sexual orientation and gender diversity terminology: how sexuality and gender are seen as on a spectrum, and why gender pronouns are becoming more prominently used in society today.  Dr. Peters lectures in, writes about, and presents on many topical subjects in her work, and to learn more, go to the MPL website where you may also sign up in advance to receive the Zoom link.   Milton yoga instructor Marianne Zullas will give the first of 3 spring classes in entle Vinyasa Flow Yoga on Saturday, 3/26, at 11:00a.m. in the Keys Community Room.  This is an in person program, which will not be available virtually.  Students will be introduced to exercises that will open up some meridian pathways in the body to create a better flow of energy, and the instruction is appropriate for ages 13 and up.  For more details, go to www.miltonlibrary.org where you must also register in advance to attend.  Here you will also learn what you need to bring with you to participate.  Marianne’s goal is to offer her students the opportunity to dissociate from constant thinking in order to be present in the moment.  Please join her for a relaxing and fun activity this Spring!

And finally, on Tuesday, 3/29, at 7:00 p.m., enthusiastic gardener and horticulturist Joan Butler of Enchanted Gardens will give a virtual nature talk called “Birdscaping: Home Sweet Habitat.”  This delightfully illustrated program explores the importance of creating welcoming habitats for birds through thoughtful landscape choices, including native plants vital for food and nesting sites.  Learn about the joys and benefits of creating beautiful layered gardens designed to bring avian performers right into our own backyards.  Joan is past Chairman of the MA Landscape Design Council, is also a member of the Garden Consultants Council, and an accredited Flower Show Judge.  Please sign up in advance at www.miltonlibrary.org (click on “events”) and you will receive the Zoom link.

All of these great programs are kindly sponsored by the Friends of the Milton Public Library and are free and open to the public.  The walking club is part of the MPL initiative called “Milton Moves” which promotes wellness, fitness, and healthy eating.  For any questions, Email [email protected] or call (617) 898-4964 for the Reference Dept.   The Milton Public Library is located at 476 Canton Avenue.
