5 tips for the new mover
Relocating to a new place is an adventure. There’s always something to look forward to, especially if you’re moving to a historic town like Milton, which has a thriving community and quaint New England charm.
As great as the rewards of a successful move are, however, the process itself can get a little taxing. Moving can get overwhelming for the average person, and a little bit of carelessness can make the whole thing more difficult than it has to be. If you’re preparing for a move and want to make sure that it goes off without a hitch, then check out our list of tips for new movers below.
Streamline Your Stuff
If there’s one thing that every person in the middle of a move struggles with, it’s wrestling with too much stuff. We can find ourselves accumulating a lot of stuff over the years, and that pile of items can get pretty daunting when prepping for a move. The solution? Learn to streamline.
Apartment Therapy says the best method for clearing out for a move can be summed up into four things: let go of what you don’t need, take stock of what you already have, re-evaluate your relationship with your possessions, and let go of what doesn’t fit in your new life. Once you do all that, you’ll find that the packing process gets much easier.
Pack Smart
The next thing you’ll want to do is to learn how to pack smart. It’s not uncommon to find yourself frazzled while unpacking after a move because you’re unable to find what you need in the chaos of boxes.
The Spruce lists a few strategies for packing your home up for a move. These include packing an essentials box that has everything you need, and make sure it’s the first thing you unload from the truck.
You should also be sure to pack heavier stuff at the bottom of your boxes, and utilize the Russian doll method of packing which is to pack smaller stuff inside larger stuff. With all of this, plus an organized inventory list, you’ll find packing and unpacking your things much easier.
Plan Ahead
When you move into a new home, there are a lot of things that you’re going to find unfamiliar. One thing you don’t want to experience, though, is unpacking after a long and tiring move and finding none of your utilities work.
When you’re getting ready for a move, planning ahead is always important — and that especially includes making sure your utilities in your new home are all in order. Apartment Guide suggests calling ahead at least three weeks before your move to make sure everything’s in order. Don’t forget to follow up with the service company and your landlord closer to the date.
Pick the Right Movers
A feature about choosing movers by AskMoney, suggests it can be a long process, but rewarding. You need to read a lot of reviews, ask about fees and extra services, check in about specialists if you need any, and so on. However, once you’ve found the right moving company, the rest of your move is going to go off without a hitch.
Be sure to zero in on what you specifically need during a move. Are you transporting heavy furniture? Fragile items? Does your current place have an elevator? What about your future home? You should also ask about moving company policies, such as whether they’ll be setting up protective tarps or not. The more information you have about the moving process, the better.
Stay Consistent
Finally, the most important thing you need to do during a move is to stay consistent. Make sure you have all aspects of your move pinned down, from the inventory list of your stuff to properly tagged and arranged boxes inside the moving truck.
Each part of your plan should have a follow through, a schedule, and some extra leeway in case of an emergency. The more organized your moving plan, the easier it’ll be on the day itself.
Happy moving!
