New name! The Milton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition is now…
The Milton Coalition
This year, coalition members spent time reflecting on how the shame and embarrassment—or stigma -associated with substance use and mental health disorders keeps those affected from receiving the help they need and deserve.
We learned that our words matter, and that negative labels perpetuate stigma. Words like “addict”, “alcoholic” and yes, even substance “abuse” are considered negative characterizations that place blame on individuals actions, when we know that addiction is a brain disease.
For that reason, our coalition members unanimously voted to change our name to THE MILTON COALITION, with the tagline Addressing Substance Use -Promoting Mental Health. We feel that our new name positively reflects who we are and what we do. We hope you like it!
With a new name comes a new logo. A subcommittee worked with a designer and discussed shape, color, and emotion. The symbol uses the M for Milton, reminds us of how we all come together to work collaboratively, and also makes us think of a sun or flower which is positive and hopeful.
