Suffrage Tea: Fashion for the Fight at the Eustis Estate on Sunday, August 8, 2021
3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Eustis Estate, 1424 Canton Avenue, Milton, MA 02186
In honor of the fundraising teas for women’s suffrage hosted at the turn of the twentieth century, the Eustis Estate welcomes fashion historian Raissa Bretaña to its own suffrage tea to speak on how fashion was a crucial part of this political movement. Dress played an important role in constructing the image of the American suffragist. Raissa examines how fashion shaped the practices of public activism, women’s rights, and dress reform in America—from the drawing rooms of wealthy socialites to the streets of New York City and even the gates of the White House. These stylized modes of dress reflected the shifting ideals of American suffragists from the dawn of the new century to the ratification of the nineteenth amendment in 1920.White clothing and Edwardian dress highly encouraged. Doors open at 3:00 p.m. and the lecture begins at 3:30 p.m., followed by summertime tea service on the terrace.
