Milton not immune to unemployment during pandemic, per poll

From April 17 – May 5, The Milton Scene polled residents on their employment status.

Many Milton residents are experiencing unemployment as well as varying reductions in salary and benefits.

We asked, “How has COVID-19 affected your employment?” 

Here are the results:

• Laid off: 11%
• Out of a job without unemployment benefits: 5%
• Employed with the same wages and benefits: 72%
• Employed with a minor reduction in wages and/or benefits: 5%
• Employed with a significant reduction in wages and/or benefits: 7%

Here’s what Milton Neighbors shared:

“Full time RN in Boston hospital with plenty overtime.”

“Next week my husband’s salary will be reduced by thirty percent.”

“Working from home, thankfully. Thanks for asking us.”

Yes, but “…who knows how long my employer will be able to continue paying me. It’s probably just a matter of time til I’m unemployed.”

“I have worked as a self employed writer/editor in educational publishing for about 6 years now. Any change in how people do school means more work for me, and thankfully my spouse is still employed and bring us the benefits we need as a family (health/dental/etc.).”

“Fully expect wage reductions and layoffs in the coming months.”

“No more overtime or extra shifts but otherwise everything is the same.”

“I also have a side business, which has been significantly impacted. Revenue is down about 50%.”

“Nurse working at a Boston hospital during the pandemic.” [employed]

“Worked for the Milton Community Schools, a self funded branch of the Milton Public Schools.” [unemployed]

This person is correct:

“You need a category for small business owners screwed by the PPP program and who non longer take salaries.”
