How did you get started in this business?

At only 16, I went to a vocational high school and had my full cosmetology license before I graduated high school. From a very early age, I loved and wanted to learn everything I could about hair.

I did a co-op program in high school working at a JCPenney hair salon. After school I got a job at a barbershop and my first haircuts were $3.00!

When did you start your business?

Ii was 39. I opened on 5/28/15.

What are some lessons you’ve learned while in business?

You must stay current in your field and know what your audience wants and how to execute it. I am constantly learning new techniques – it’s important for my business and also for me. The art of creating beautiful hair is my passion!

Have you always worked in this type of business or have you dabbled in other things?

Some time ago, I used to sell cars while doing hair to make extra money.

If you could provide advice to anyone looking to start a business in the area, what would it be?

My advice would be to take a small business course so that you don’t make some of the mistakes I have had to learn from – and read every single contract that you sign. If you have trouble understanding a contract, make sure you find somebody who can explain it to you.

Please describe your ideal customer.

Someone that likes to change it up be adventurous with their haircut and color. I love co-creating new looks for my clients!

What is your #1 tip for other business owners?

To breathe and to be patient.
