Milton Public Library to host fun adult events throughout September 2019
Programs include topics that fit all interests and skills
During September the Milton Public Library has organized some fun programs for adults and families! On Wednesday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m., Patricia White of twhitecreations.com will present a program called “Social Media: Marketing Essentials for Creatives.” If you work in the fields of photography, art, food, writing, design, music, or any other creative pursuit and are passionate about your talent, you want people to find you and buy your products and services. Ms. White will discuss brands, websites, strategies that drive customers to you, marketing tips and tricks, and much more. There is no signup required and your host will be Tech Specialist Chris Callaghan. Then on Thursday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m., there will be an author talk by Hallie Ephron about her brand new book called Careful What You Wish For, which will be preceded by a meeting of the Friends of the Milton Public Library in the Conference Room. Ephron’s new novel, released August 2019, is about Emily Harlow, a professional organizer, who helps people declutter their lives; she’s married to a man who can’t drive past a yard sale without stopping. Emily would love to toss out her husband’s stuff, and although he says he’s a “collector,” she knows he’s a hoarder. Luckily she has two new clients to distract her from the distance growing between her and her husband and after fantasizing with one client about how much more pleasant life would be without their collecting spouses, Emily finds herself in a mess that might be too big for her to clean up! Read this fascinating tale to learn more and you can place a reserve on the book by calling the Reference desk. Please come on September 19th.
Our first concert for adults and families is happening on Saturday, September 21 at 2:00 p.m. as part of “Milton Porchfest,” to be held on the “old front porch” of the Library. The group will be The Ezekiel Wheels Klezmer Band and this internationally-acclaimed quintet brings passion, virtuosity, and contagious energy to every performance. The Wheels improvise with the intimacy of chamber music and the intensity of a rowdy dance band, great for all ages! Their music is irresistible to audiences ranging from elementary school students to the judges at the International Jewish Music Festival. Having honed their unique style in the subway stations and farmers’ markets of Boston, the Wheels include Abigale Reisman on violin and vocals, Jonathan Cannon on violin, Kirsten Lamb on double bass and vocals, Nat Seelen on clarinet, and Pete Fanelli on trombone. Come join them for a great time for the whole family in the beautiful outdoors, and please bring an umbrella for sun and a chair or blanket to sit on the front lawn. (In case of rain, this event will be held in the Keys Community Room.) Refreshments will be available and we hope you will all come dance and make merry during this fun event to kick off the Fall season!
There will be another meeting of The Cookbook Club with Sara Truog and Connie Spiros held on Monday, September 23 from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Calling all cooks! Each club meeting will feature a selected cookbook, and members will prepare a tasty treat from the book to bring to the Library and share. The book chosen for September is Plenty More by Yotam Ottolenghi (c2014). Copies of it are available at the Borrower Services desk and you will need to register if you would like to attend, at the library events calendar. Once you register, you’ll receive more details about the club. Bon Appetit! On Tuesday, September 24 starting promptly at 6:30 p.m., there will be a free screening of “The Upside” as part of “Tuesday Night at the Movies.” This film stars Bryan Cranston, Kevin Hart, Nicole Kidman and Julianna Maguiles. When Park Avenue billionaire Phillip Lacasse is paralyzed after a hang-gliding accident, he hires unqualified ex-con Dell Scott as his caretaker. Phil has recently lost his wife to cancer and has also lost the will to live, and Dell is the best candidate to carry out his Do Not Resuscitate edict should his health deteriorate. Phil and Dell end up forming an unlikely friendship, coming from such completely different worlds, but they end up experiencing a wonderful meeting of the minds. Phil learns to love Aretha Franklin and Dell learns to love opera, and the situation gives Dell a stable financial footing so badly needed. This is a wonderful story which will warm your heart, and it is based on the French film “The Untouchables” which tells the true tale of Philippe Pozo di Borgo. This film is rated PG-13 for suggestive content and drug use, and the running time is 126 minutes.
For our ongoing programs, there will be two sessions of Betty Siegel’s “Drop-in Writing Workshop” on Wednesdays, September 4 and September 18, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. If you love to write and would like to connect with other budding authors, please come meet Betty, get some helpful advice and perhaps share your drafts with the group. No signup is required. Tech Specialist Chris Callaghan will hold his “Drop-in Device Help” workshop on Tuesday, September 10 at 10:00 a.m. Just stop by (as no signup is required) with your electronic device to learn all about how to reserve and download library materials from our website. You can get solutions to your device problems from an expert! In addition Chris will hold a class called “Overdrive & Hoopla” on Tuesday, September 24 at 10:00 a.m., also in the Conference Room. This will be an overview of two popular services you can access using your Milton Library card, and laptops will be available to a limited number of attendees. This program does require sign-up in advance at our website so click on “events” from the main page to register. The Library Knitting Group will start again on Thursday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m. with only one meeting this month. Come bring your knitting project and chat with other like-minded people, make new friends, and learn more about this fun craft. No sign-up is required to attend the knitting program.
And finally there will be a two-part presentation and discussion by Dutch artist and historian Dirkje Legerstee in September, in conjunction with her Wotiz Gallery exhibit called “Angels in Human Skin.” This exhibit will show images and stories about her family’s survival through World War II as Nazi war victims. Her father was a Dutch Christian and was taken by the Nazis as a labor slave, and her mother was a Polish Jew who was a survivor of the Shoah. Dirkje’s installation depicts a process of externalizing a story that has shaped her and haunted her imagination for decades as a second generation Holocaust Survivor sponsored to come to America. The gallery’s contents will include a multi-media collage and a memory map that spans 60 years, plus much more. This tribute to her parents will be described further in a talk given by Dr. Legerstee on Wednesday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., following her Wotiz gallery reception from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. that same night. Then on Saturday, September 28 at 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., Rev. Legerstee will hold a follow-up inter-faith discussion to include local clergy about the holocaust and her family history, which is open to everyone also. Both programs will be held in the lower level Keys Community Room, and we are asking those who attend the Saturday program to meet first at 9:00 a.m. in the Wotiz Gallery upstairs before the discussion. Please come to the Library in September to meet Dirjke and learn more about what inspired her to create this fascinating historical art installation.
