Milton Public Library to host multiple fun programs throughout July

Programs to include Drop-In Device Help, Writing Workshop, Tuesday Night at the Movies, and more

During the month of July, the Milton Public Library is offering several fun and educational programs for adults and families. On Monday, July 8 at 7:00 p.m. there will be a talk by tea and herb enthusiast Lisa Tavakoli called “Decorative Edibles: Use What You Have and Have What You Use”and Suzette Standring will be your host for this fun event. Lisa will share her vision of food recycling, by teaching us how to assemble a vegetable arrangement in the perfect vessel, a teapot! In this class you will learn to bring our food resources full circle in recycling, while assembling easy and highly creative arrangements to delight family and guests. No registration is needed, just bring along your camera so you can take photos of Lisa’s beautiful and edible creations! Chris Callaghan will hold his monthly “Drop in Device Help” sessions on Tuesday, July 9 at 10:00 a.m. and on Wednesday, July 31 at 6:00 p.m. Stop by to get help downloading materials like Ebooks, audiobooks, movies, and music to your electronic device. There is no sign-up required and Chris will do his best to answer all your questions about taking full advantage of what your Milton library card has to offer. And our ongoing “Drop-in Writing Workshop with Betty Siegel” will continue with the final two sessions for the summer on Wednesday, July 10 and July 24, from 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Conference Room. If you love to write and would like to connect with other budding authors, please come meet Betty and get some helpful tips and perhaps share your drafts with the group. There is no signup required so you can just stop by.

Also there will be a special event this summer to give everyone chance to tour a “Tiny House” built on the back of a box truck which will be parked at the Library for a three-hour period. This fun opportunity will be happening on Thursday, July 11 between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., and is open to all ages. Our host will be Alex Eaves, who is a “Reuse Expert” and he will greet you to tell you all about the tiny house before you visit it in the Library parking lot, so all can see what a cool concept this is. All materials that go into creating the tiny house come from recycled materials which is such a great thing about this kind of lifestyle. There will also be snacks available during the tour for those attending to enjoy. Please come and check out a much more frugal way of owning a house, which you can also drive from place to place! Author Derek “Deek” Diedrickson, who has written the book Micro-living: 40 Innovative Tiny Houses Equipped for Full-Time Living, in 400 Square Feet or Less (c2018, Storey Publishing), has been instrumental in helping to bring us this program and we encourage you to also check out his book which you may place a reserve on by calling the Reference Dept. Please come to take advantage of this unique opportunity which is also great for kids!

The Tuesday Night at the Movies pick for July is “Green Book” which stars Academy Award winner Viggo Mortensen and Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali. This film, which will be shown on Tuesday, July 16, starting promptly at 6:30 p.m., was inspired by a true friendship that transcended race, class, and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line. When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighbourhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on “The Green Book” to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger as well as unexpected humanity and humor – they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime. This film is rated PG-13 for “thematic content, language including racial epithets, smoking, some violence and suggestive material” and the running time is 2 hours, 10 minutes. Please come to the library to see a wonderful movie if you missed this one!
