Sports personality Upton Bell to headline Milton Library Foundation gala

Upton Bell to discuss his critically acclaimed debut autobiography, Present at the Creation: My Life in the NFL and the Rise of America’s Game

Former Milton resident, New England Patriots General Manager, and legendary New England sports personality Upton Bell will discuss his critically acclaimed debut autobiography, Present at the Creation: My Life in the NFL and the Rise of America’s Game, on Wednesday, October 17, at Granite Links Golf Club, as the Milton Library Foundation presents its annual gala to benefit the Milton Public Library.

Mr. Bell said that he was excited to see old friends and Library supporters at the event, “I can’t wait to share my story about the early years of the modern NFL and how it compares to the NFL today, which of course will include some colorful anecdotes.” Following his presentation, Mr. Bell will take questions from the audience.

This year’s event will be the kickoff to the 10th anniversary of the Library’s revitalization, and will also include music, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, and recognition of the citizen volunteers who served on the Library Study and Building Committees leading up to the 2009 reopening of the Library.

About “Present at the Creation” and Upton Bell

To understand how the NFL became the sports phenomenon it is today, you can study its history or you can live its history as an active participant. Upton Bell grew up at the knee of the NFL’s first great commissioner, his father, the legendary Bert Bell, who not only saved the game from financial ruin after World War II but was one of its greatest innovators. Coining the phrase, “On any given Sunday,” Bert Bell invented the pro football draft and proposed sudden death rules.

“Present at the Creation” details Bell’s firsthand experiences, which started as he watched his father draw up the league schedule each year at the kitchen table using dominoes. Over the past fifty-four years, Bell has been an owner, a general manager, a personnel executive, a scouting director for two Super Bowl teams, a television commentator and analyst, and a talk-radio host. He has seen the NFL from the inside and has experienced many of the most important moments in NFL history.
