Demolition equipment to soon be moved to Hendries property

Plan approved by DEP on July 23rd, 2018

In May, the demolition of the former Hendries Ice Cream building located at 131 Eliot Street, Milton, was postponed based on the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) review of documentation submitted by the former demolition contractor hired by Carrick Realty Trust, the owner of the property. Subsequently, Carrick Realty Trust retained a new demolition contractor, which has made the necessary filings with DEP.

On July 23, 2018, DEP approved the new demolition contractor’s plan, subject to various conditions being satisfied as the demolition work proceeds. Town officials are working with Carrick Realty Trust, its contractor, and the MBTA to reschedule the demolition of the building for late summer.

Demolition equipment will soon be moved to the Hendries property. Pre-demolition work will be performed at 131 Eliot Street for a few weeks. Demolition of the building will occur over a one-week period, during which the MBTA will replace the trolley service with bus service along the Mattapan-Ashmont route. Firm dates for the suspension of the MBTA trolley service are not yet available but will be announced soon.

The Board of Selectmen and Town officials will provide periodic updates on the Hendries project during the next few weeks.
