New operating room opens at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Milton
Operating room part of a major facilities expansion project
Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Milton (BID-Milton) recently opened a new operating room as part of a major facilities expansion project. The new operating room (OR) will enable BID-Milton to perform robotic surgery five days a week in a dedicated OR. The hospital now has seven full-service operating rooms and a minor procedure room within its Surgical Services Department.
“BID-Milton has one of the fastest growing surgery programs in the state and is a community-based surgical center of excellence for the Beth Israel Deaconess system,” said Rich Fernandez, president and CEO of the hospital. “This new OR will allow us to further expand our robotic surgery program and accommodate the growing number of surgeons who are joining the hospital due to our excellent healthcare quality and patient safety results along with our lower cost of providing care.”
BID-Milton launched a new robotic surgery program a year ago. There are seven surgeons performing robotic surgery at the hospital, including five who are on staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. Robotic surgery is being currently performed in the specialties of urology, gynecology, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology and colorectal surgery. Hospital officials plan to expand the robotic surgery program into bariatric (weight loss) surgery this summer.
The opening of the new operating room marks the completion of phase two of a major facilities expansion project which started approximately 18 months ago.
Phase one was completed last December with the opening of a new outpatient Rehabilitation Services Center on the hospital’s ground floor.
Phase three is the renovation of an existing wing in the hospital into a new medical surgical unit called 2East. The unit will feature 12 private patient rooms and is expected to be completed this summer.
This is the hospital’s first major expansion project in five years. Funds were raised at the hospital’s Annual Gala in early May for the project.
“As BID-Milton has grown into a leading regional community hospital, more patients are choosing to come to the hospital for their healthcare,” explained Mr. Fernandez. “This growth made it necessary to undertake these projects which will provide our patients, physicians and staff with modern treatment and healing environments. We are grateful to the community for its support of the hospital and this facilities expansion project.”
