Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills to celebrate holiday of Purim

Date and location:

Wednesday, February 28th, 2018 at 5:00 p.m. at Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills, located at 18 Shoolman Way in Milton

Details:

The festive Jewish holiday of Purim will be celebrated at Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills (formerly Temples Shalom of Milton and Beth El of Quincy) this year with a special evening of merriment for the whole family and the community.

On Wednesday evening, February 28th, the synagogue will host a Community Purim Celebration and Passover Wine Tasting.  Starting at 5:00 p.m., while families with small children enjoy face painting and Megillah Madness Activities, adults may begin the Passover Wine Tasting, with the opportunity later to order their favorite wines for their Passover Seder.

At 6:00 p.m. the entire congregation will come together for a Purim Pasta Dinner (children free, adults $5.00/per person, RSVP required).  At 6:30 p.m. a “dramatic” retelling of the Purim story will take place in the Sanctuary, while a “Shalom Sesame” Purim Video and Crafts for young children will be available upstairs.

At 7:15 p.m. will be a Costume Parade with prizes, followed by Hamantashen and treats.  Finally, at 7:45 p.m. there will be a full traditional Megillah reading.  The public is invited to any or all portions of the celebration, and costumes are encouraged for all ages.

The Megillah mentioned above tells the Purim story of Esther and her uncle Mordecai, who saved their Jewish brethren in ancient Shushan from the evil designs of the wicked Haman.  Children and adults wear costumes and listen carefully to the Hebrew text so they can use noisemakers to drown out the name of Haman every time it is uttered.

Cong. Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills conducts a full schedule of religious, cultural, educational and social events and services throughout the year.  It also operates a religious school for Jewish children of all grade levels.
