Recently, the Milton Scene asked Milton Neighbors their opinions on health care coverage for elected officials.
Do you think Milton’s paid elected officials should receive health care coverage?
At the December 12, 2017 Board of Selectmen meeting, current BOS members voted that elected officials will no longer be eligible to participate in Milton’s health insurance program. This change will apply to both Board of Selectmen members and Town Assessors. In April 2018, Milton’s Board of Selectmen will increase from three to five members. The poll was open December 21-27, 2017.
The results:
78.4% of respondents: No, I do not think paid elected officials like Board of Selectmen members should receive health insurance.
21.6% of respondents: Yes, I think paid elected officials like Board of Selectmen members should receive health insurance.
While some respondents were confident that elected officials “should have other jobs that cover them,” others were concerned:
“There needs to be information before changing the policy. It affects employees’ lives and it is irresponsible to make this decision with limited information. Milton is better than this.”
