When: Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Where: Milton Public Library, 476 Canton Avenue, Milton
Library Director Will Adamczyk will host his “Local History Book Group with Will” on Wednesday, December 6th, 2017 from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in the Conference Room. The book to read in advance is Curse of the Narrows by Laura MacDonald (c2005), which is the story of the Halifax disaster of 1017. Boston went to their rescue and that is why Halifax delivers the Boston Common Christmas Tree each year. In 1917, the port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was crowded with ships leaving for war-torn Europe. On December 6th, two of them – the Mont Blanc and the Imo – collided in the Narrows, a hard-to-navigate stretch of the harbour. Ablaze, and with explosions on her deck filling the sky, the Mont Blanc grounded against the city’s docks. As thousands rushed to their windows and into the streets to watch, she exploded with such force that the 3,121 tons of her iron hull vaporized in a cloud that shot up more than 2,000 feet. The blast caused a giant wave that swept over parts of the city, followed by a slick, black rain that fell for 10 minutes. Much of the city was flattened, as no buildings were left undamaged. More than 1,600 people were killed and 6,000 injured. Please read this fascinating story and join Will for an engaging discussion.
