Milton to explore Town broadband
At last week’s Board of Selectmen meeting, former school committee member Mike Zullas, and Joe Chamberlin, both Milton residents, proposed the initiation of a committee to explore setting up a Town-run broadband utility.
As we have repeatedly seen on Milton Neighbors, residents experience many frustrations with Comcast’s broadband service, and though some residents have access to other services, such as RCN, for many, there are no alternatives.
The Milton Board of Selectmen approved the initiation of a committee to study the feasibility of Town broadband.
According to the presentation, the Milton Municipal Broadband Initiative seeks to energize residents, Town government, businesses, and non-profits about the possibility of improving and updating our broadband network, with the following goals for all users:
- Lower costs
- Improved speed and capacity
- Improved service
- Capability for open-access to multiple internet service providers
- Net-neutrality, so that content is not tiered, blocked or bundled
Comcast’s near-monopoly with high prices, subpar speed and capacity, and subpar service, were listed as the reasons for the initiative.

Comcast has been horrible lately. Wifi is either extremely slow or won’t connect, I have had to use cellular data at home. Contacting them is so difficult we haven’t even done anything about it. They will just say we need to upgrade to something more expensive. So we hope it will turn itself around!
