Elegance and Aspiration: Money, Taste, and Jewelry in America’s Gilded Age to be held at Eustis Estate
When: Thursday, September 28, 2017 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Where: Eustis Estate, 1424 Canton Avenue, Milton
Jewelry serves a dual purpose: to ornament the body and to send a message about status, power, and wealth. America’s Gilded Age saw an explosion of new wealth unlike any since the Renaissance. As Americans grew rich, they embraced the symbols of power: houses, clothing, and jewelry. Meanwhile, America’s middle class embraced jewelry with just as much enthusiasm, creating a vast jewelry consumer market that was unique in the history of the world.
Ulysses Dietz, curator of decorative arts at the Newark Museum, presents this lecture in conjunction with the exhibition Mementos: Jewelry of Life and Love from Historic New England.
The price is $15 for Historic New England members and $25 for nonmembers.
Registration required. Please call 617-994-6600 or register online: http://shop.historicnewengland.org/EUS-LECTURE-2-10525/
