Turtle Festival to be held at Blue Hills Trailside Museum

When: Saturday, May 20th, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

Join us at the Blue Hills Trailside Museum as we celebrate one of the oldest groups of animals, the turtles. Take a close look at the museum’s turtle residents and find out what makes turtles special animals and vital components of the natural world. Many of our native turtles have a tough time contending with habitat loss, litter, automobile traffic, and the pet trade. People with warm hearts can still help their cold-blooded neighbors and keep turtles in the wild!

Visit the museum from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and explore at your own pace. Learn more about turtles at special exhibits inside the museum, from the surprising things they eat to the places where they live. Find out with hands-on activities what’s inside a turtle shell and how their scales protect turtles. Children can enjoy crafts and games that will help them learn more about these ancient reptiles. We’ll share how taking some simple, everyday actions can make a difference in turtle conservation.

You can hear the story of how some people have gone beyond the ordinary to become turtle heroes. At 2:00 p.m., Bob Prescott, director of the Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, will give a presentation on the Cold-stunned Sea Turtle Rescue and Recovery Program. This is the largest program of its kind in the world, rescuing more than 2,000 turtles over the last three years.

Registration is not required. The cost is $6 for members and $8 for non-members.
