Betty White announces candidacy for School Committee
My name is Betty White and I’m running for one of the two open positions on the Milton School Committee. For the past three decades, I have been an active and engaged member of our beautiful community, serving on the Warrant (Finance) Committee, Town Meeting member , volunteering for issues and causes aimed at strengthening our community, and most importantly, being a parent of student that is the product of the Milton Public Schools. My son, Daniel White, Class of 2013, received an excellent education and was accepted to all of the colleges he applied to. He is currently a senior at University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
I have a history of working to advance the quality of education in Milton. From working as a leader in the campaigns to rebuild all six Milton Public School to serving on the Milton High School Site Council to volunteering on the Milton Public School Diversity Committee, I have been working for many years to improve the educational experience for all of Milton’s children.
These experiences alongside neighbors and friends have inspired my desire to serve on the Milton School Committee to work for greater excellence for our schools.
As proud as I am of the Milton Public Schools, I believe the system is facing the challenge of its success as enrollment is growing due to the reputation of the town and our schools. A growing enrollment will put pressure on the budget, class size, and space. While there will be no easy solutions, I do believe I have the depth of knowledge to identify strategies and solutions to move the schools forward.
As the Warrant Committee lead for the school budget, I am familiar with the complexity of the budget and of the school systems needs. I support the proposed override as it will keep our community strong.
My education includes a BA from Providence College, a Masters of Social Work from Boston College, and course work toward an MBA at Boston University. For the last six teen years, I have been employed as a School Adjustment Councilor in the Dedham Public Schools. I have also operated and owned my own counseling practice.
I welcome your questions and concerns. My email is [email protected]. I would appreciate your vote on Tuesday, April 25, 2017. Thank you.
